But until then, we have this fun weekend section feature from Hays Davis at the Richmond Times-Dispatch that reveals the extent of our yacht rock nerdery. Thanks to photographers Eric Perkins and Ashly Covington, whose images grace the pages shown above and below, respectively. See everybody tonight at the debut of our Third Thursday residency at the Tobacco Company!
Richmond Magazine, AUGUST 2012
Named "Best Local Band" in 2011's Best & Worst poll, Richmond's favorite yacht rockers are back for another round. Band leader Topper Dandy notes that Three Sheets draws a wide cross-section of fans with its covers of classics by the likes of Toto and Christopher Cross, but "they're all united by soft rock and booze." Who would have thought that these kids today with their techno and remixes would latch onto something called yacht rock — described by this group’s lead singer, Capt. Max Power, as “music that makes you want to order a piña colada.” The premise: a group cryogenically frozen at the request of Loggins, McDonald, Hall and Oates in 1985 to “bring a great awakening to mankind” in 2009 — “smooth or die.” Fans span generations. The band regularly plays Republic. Next cruise: Friday Cheers, May 27. Request “Rosanna.” |
